Studies on Sex Chromatin in Human Fetal Tissues

Abstract
The author made a study on sex chromatin of smears obtained from the various organs of sexually intact Korean fetus ranging from 4 months to 10 months old and adults of both sexes, using hematoxylin-biebrich scarlet-fast green method by Guard.
The results were as follow:
1) The organs in which the sex chromatin could be demonstrable are skin, vagina, oral, mucosa, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, salivary gland, pancreas, thyroid gland, lung, heart, kidney, uterus, and testis. The organs in which the sex chromatin was difficult to demonstrate are brain, liver, spleen and blood corpuscles.
2) No significant variation in the appearance rate of the sex chromatin according to fetal age was observed between 4 months and 10 months of the fetal age. The appearance rate of the sex chromatin among the various organs showed no remarkable difference. The average appearance rate of the sex chromatin in the male fetus was from 0.2% to 3.4% (range; 0-8%) and in the female fetus from 84.6% to 96.6%(range; 79-100%)
3) In adult males, there was no significant difference in the appearance rate of the sex chromatin among the various organ tissues. The average rate of the sex chromatin was from 0.6% to 5.6% (range; 0-8%. However, in adult female, the difference in the appearance rate of the sex chromatin was to some extent because of relatively lower appearance rate in skin and oral muccsa. That is, the average appearance rate of the sex chromatin in the skin and oral mucosa were 62.0%(range; 59-72%) and 52.4% (range; 41-68%) respectively. The appearance rate of the remaining organs showed very similar figures, the average being 84.4-94.4%(range; 74=99%). These figures are similar to those of the fetus.
4) Sexual difference in the appearance rate of the sex chromatin in the various organ tissues of both fetus and adults was apparent.
5) Among three types of the sex schromatin the appearance rate in the various organ tissues of the adult and fetus in order of the frequency was marginal type, submarginal type and bipartite type. Bipartite type was seen in every organ tissue of the female while in the male it was seen rarely.
